Toxicology

Dr. Birkholz is currently an adjunct professor in the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Alberta (U of A), Edmonton. He was also an adjunct professor in the Dept of Medicine, U of A. He lectured since 1990 on medical lab analyses, toxicology, advanced analytical procedures (mass spectrometry), endocrine disruption and human biomonitoring. Mass spectrometry is currently one of the main tools used in metabolomic studies. Dr. Birkholz conducted and managed human biomonitoring studies since the early 2000” s providing services to industry, government (Alberta Health), academia (Canada and abroad) as well as the Centres for Disease control. He assisted physicians and academics in studying the relationship between exposure to chemicals and chronic illness. He was co-author of several Blood, Urine, and Sweat studies pioneered by Dr. Genuis, a clinician. Dr. Birkholz has lectured extensively on health concerns related to exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals in Canada, US and in Europe. Chronic illness is debilitating our health care system resulting in frustrated patients and physicians and spiraling health care costs. A recent workshop organized by the National Institute of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, emphasized the need for more collaboration on the health effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals and the need for more medical intervention options.

Dr. Birkholz was invited to speak at an international medical conference held in Jamaica, in 2023 and was also invited to present at the NIH workshop.
